computer programmer job description
How useful is a degree in applied mathematics for a career in games programming in comparison with other grades?

I have read a lot about computer science degrees is the best grades to get into programming computer games. However, I am a bit worried that it would be difficult to achieve for me, as you still have to learn anything about programming. I am, however, good at mathematics at school (I've been getting 5 to 7 in IB Mathematics Standard Level for anyone curious). I hear that is another of Applied Mathematics degree accepted by game developers, and this has been confirmed by the control of job descriptions for game developers to major developers, such as valves, Bethesda Softworks and Infinity Ward. I wonder what other people have to say (especially those in the gaming industry) on the value of a degree in applied mathematics in comparison with a Bachelor of Science Computation. Any help is appreciated:)

First, let me say that I am not in that industry so my answer with a grain of salt. My thoughts are that a computer science degree is probably more appropriate for someone who wants to be a game programmer. Of course this probably depends on the aspect of the game industry you want to focus. Depending on Applied Mathematics would like to do, you have to do programming. However, the receive training in programming as an applied mathematician is a bit different from the training they receive as a programmer in computer science. One of my buddys computer science is always a joke that we applied math types who do not really know how to program. And from his vision, has a point. Certainly he is a player like that. Mathematics, however, play an important role in the game. Especially with graphics. This may be more than pure mathematics applied however.

The creation of computer software is traditionally associated with technically brilliant but socially inept people – the programmer character in the movie ‘Jurassic Park’ being a perfect example. However, the development of commercial software is a task requiring input from a multi-disciplinary team, the success of which depends not only on the team members’ technical skills, but also on their abi…
