I have a 64-bit version of Vista on my laptop with 3GB 667 DDR2. Would it be worth to get 4GB DDR2 800?
I just upgraded Vista 32-bit to 64-bit Vista. I in my team than 3 GB of DDR2 667 RAM. If I had to get 4 GB of DDR2 800 RAM, I would be able to use all 4gb in dual channel mode instead of just 2 GB. It only costs $ 60 on Newegg and I was wondering if the performance increase is worth the sixty dollars. Indeed, the nominal FSB of my processor 800MHz is, does this mean my laptop can use the entire 800 MHz RAM? How do I know if my motherboard supports DDR2 800 RAM?
If your BIOS allows, you can overclock the memory. I overclocked my 667 Mhz DDR2 memory to 740 without problems. You can find 1 gig Kingston 667 DDR2 memory very Walmart $ 35.00. You should use the same memory speed of all the chips. I have 4 GB of RAM and using Windows Server 2008 Enterprise 64-bit on my desktop and have the running FSB to 1467 Mhz. The problem with laptops would be cooling. If I were you, I will not reach 800 Mhz RAM if you still going to use the same 667 time. You might have problems. But … might not! Just my opinion.
