Is it hard for an American to get a job in Europe?
I'm a major computer science to graduate from college top 20, and need a drastic change of scenery. I have been convinced that I live abroad for more than a year, and some of the places I love to live are Russia, Germany and France. I am good with languages and am willing to take as much as necessary to learn the mother tongue of the country. Is it difficult to get work in the field of information technology in these countries, assuming they have met the language domain?
Top 20 universities in Europe does not mean much unless you have very specialized knowledge to back it up. So many people have degrees in computer science, so that alone is not an easy way in. To be hired as an American in the EU, a company must demonstrate that no other EU applicant can fill the position. You need excellent contacts and have skills that are rare and in demand. If you have unusual abilities in a particular programming language, is a genius of mathematics or logic, or have something more that sets you apart from the masses, it is possible that you could find work. I was the friend of an American typographer in Sweden, which was hired by a local company (only with English language skills), but he is well known in this field and does exceptional work that has made him a wanted product around the world.
